ASAD Chose Its “Special” President, Saying Differences Are Beautiful and We Are Aware

The Anatolian Underwater Research and Sports Association (ASAD) Board of Directors granted special honorary presidency status to Erdinç Atal, who has Down syndrome.

Announcing the decision taken by the ASAD Board, Mehmet Salih Aygün, Chairman of the Board, conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to Atal.

In a statement made on the occasion of March 21, World Down Syndrome Day, Aygün said:
“In 2011, the United Nations designated March 21 as World Down Syndrome Awareness Day to raise public awareness about Down syndrome, prevent discrimination and negative attitudes toward individuals with Down syndrome, emphasize the importance of early and continuous education, and increase employment opportunities and workplaces. As an association, on this special and meaningful day, we granted special presidency status to our brother with Down syndrome, Erdinç Atal. He has been actively involved with us since the founding of our association. He is confident, socializes easily, and uses social media effectively. His environmental awareness, passion for Lake Van, interest in underwater activities, and strong work ethic set him apart during our association’s events. His contributions—both in promoting our association and in our activities—are invaluable. I would also like to congratulate his family, who have put great effort into his upbringing and education.”
